Our livestock

Three generations of the Henderson family have been noted for the production of high quality pedigree and commercial cattle since the family's move in 1940 from Ormlie, near Thurso in Caithness, to Culrain Mains.

Grandfather, George Henderson, won numerous fatstock championships at Dingwall over the years and in the mid-1950s started a small pedigree herd of Aberdeen-Angus. The herd's most notable success was in 1963 when Black Lance of Culrain was sod for 1000gns to Mrs J Alexander's Milford herd which was one of the oldest established and most renowned herds in the Republic of Ireland at the time.

Pressure from the continental breeds took the business away from pedigree Aberdeen-Angus for a number of years before the present Culrain herd was re-established in 1999 by George's grandson, Robert, who with his wife Anne, has built the herd up to 50 cows from a handful of foundation females from Netherton, Eastfield, Haymount and Auchencloich.

Stock bulls over the years have come from Idves, Rawburn, Hallington, Logie, Varis, Balmachie and Cardona. 

Bulls from the herd have been sold into pedigree and commercial herds the length and breadth of the country, from Orkney to Salisbury and the Western Isles of Lewis and Harris to Aberdeenshire.

The herd was first winner of the Highland Aberdeen-Angus Club's annual Herd of the Year competition in 2014 and supplied 18 females sold as foundation stock for the Foggie herd in Aberdeenshire. 

As well as selling at Society and local auction sales, a healthy private trade has been built up to a base of returning clientele in the North of Scotland. Customers have enjoyed championship success, with commercial young stock by Culrain sires outperforming even Charolais crosses.

The herd is a member of HiHealth Herdcare and has been accredited free from BVD since 2010 and held Risk Level 1 Johne's Disease status since 2013. 

Visitors are always welcome to look round the herd.

Culrain is also home to our award winning flock of pedigree North Country Cheviot sheep. These hardy animals live on the hills surrounding the farm coming onto the 'in-bye' fields in April for lambing. Lambs are sold at the world famous Lairg Lamb Sale in August, the largest one day sheep sale in Europe.
