Things to do

An Sidhean is wonderfully situated for exploring the North Highlands. Sections of the NC500 can easily be completed returning to your cosy cottage for an evening relaxing in front of the wood burner. The pretty Cathedral town of Dornoch, with its world famous golf course and stunning beach, is a leisurely 25 minute drive, along the beautiful Dornoch Firth, to the East. An hour will take you to the West coast, Ullapool, Lochinver, the iconic Kylesku Bridge, the white sands of Acmelvich and Clachtol. Ninety minutes driving on stunning Highland roads and you reach the North West corner of Scotland, Durness, Smoo Cave and Balnakeil Beach. Drive from here along the breathtaking North coast with its rich Viking history to John O' Groats.

Closer to home, Culrain was the site of The Battle of Carbisdale fought in 1650, the forests of Carbisdale and Balblair offer stunning walks and mountain bike trails (you can hire bike from Heaven Bikes in Bonar Bridge). The Falls of Shin is a fabulous local attraction where you can watch salmon leaping the falls on their way up-river to spawn, have fun in the adventure play park, follow the forest trails and enjoy a meal or snack in 'Mac and Wild', the onsite restaurant. There is fishing to be had in the Kyle and other local lochs, including our own Loch Choire. If golfing is your passion, you are spoiled for choice with seven courses within easy reach, the closest is the picturesque Bonar Bridge course just over the water and up the hill. Horseriding and canoe adventures are just some of the activities on offer or you can learn to shoot at the Highland Shooting Range in Altass. Might like to take a tour of our local distilleries, the closest are Balblair in Edderton and Glenmorangie in Tain.

Bonar Bridge offers a well stocked grocer/bakery, farm butchers, chemist, specialist bike shop (offering bike hire), Post Office, hardware store, art supplies shop, restaurant and takeaway. Ardgay Stores and Highland Cafe is home to an impressive range of whiskeys as well as a good selection of general goods, maps and their delicious bacon rolls.

The North Highland Line has a request stop in Culrain on its way from Inverness to Wick and back. A 25 minute train ride will take you North to Dunrobin Castle, the 'fairy tale' seat of the Dukes of Sutherland, or South to Inverness and a link to Loch Ness for a day spent 'monster hunting'.

There really is so much to do, or just simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Kyle of Sutherland.
